You can probably tell from the title that this is a cozy mystery. I enjoy cozies as they are fun and relaxing reads. My daughter obtained a copy of this book and asked to me read it and see what I thought. Diamond Rings Are Deadly Things is set in Ketchum, Idaho which is in the Sun Valley Resort area. Adrielle Pyper has set up her wedding planner business here after a turn of events brought her from San Francisco. She had been a wedding planner in SF until a disastrous event occurred, the murder of her best friend, Briette. Adri, as she calls herself, was planning Briette’s wedding when the bride to be was found murdered in her wedding gown and her expensive ring gone. The murder is still unsolved, the loss of her best friend weighs heavily on her mind, and her business in SF folded after the murder when prospective brides pulled out of their contracts with Adri.
Why Idaho? Adri was a born and raised Idaho farm girl. Sun Valley has expensive resorts and people with money to spend on the ideal wedding. Adri sets up her shop with a seamstress who makes and alters gowns. They order a shipment of one-of-a-kind gowns from China with two set aside as the “perfect” ones for the two upcoming weddings they are hosting.
The first 4 or 5 chapters were slow and I had to push through them. I got tired of hearing about their wedding planner business. There was no action despite the fact that bridezilla, Sylvia Rockport, sometimes TV star, is one of their clients and makes a scene wherever she goes, including at the wedding shop. Finally some action occurred when they realized one of the gowns they ordered was missing and one had a slash in the hem. Who and why?
Adri agrees to a date with a handsome guy named Dallas, and meets the new divorce attorney in turn who does not believe in marriage. Throw in a movie star and his bride to be and things get interesting. The woman marrying the movie star is completely opposite to bridezilla and Adri is glad to have one client who is level headed.
I still wanted more action and finally the excitement picks up as Adria finds a bag of rough, uncut diamonds in the hem of a gown. What to do with them? If she reports it to the police, they’ll take the gown as evidence and it will ruin the wedding coming up in 3 weeks. She hides the diamonds and holds her tongue.
Dallas is putting the pressure on to up the relationship. Adri’s heart flip flops every time she sees the attorney. Someone is leaving threatening notes on her door wanting the diamonds.
I ended up liking the book after all. The author included great craft and other tips at the beginning of each chapter. I enjoyed reading those and getting ideas for my own use. I still felt it was too slow in the beginning and I waited and waited for action. However, once the action appeared, it was pretty fast paced. And of course, to go along with the title, there is a wedding ring involved. I do have to say, though, that it seemed like Adri, while possibly going bankrupt and losing her business because of the missing gowns, sure ate out a lot. I’d be pinching my pennies if it was me. And how did she stay so tall and beautiful with all the barbecue and sandwiches and chocolate candies she consumed? I’d like to have that secret for myself. Wouldn’t you?
So if you can be patient for a few chapters and don’t mind reading pages and pages of how the wedding shop is set up, etc., and you like romantic mysteries, I think you will enjoy reading this cozy mystery. It turned out to be a fun read with a couple of twists, one I picked up on and one that I did not see coming. Read it and see if you can solve the whodunit yourself.
