Book Review: A Deadly Business by Lis Wiehl

A Deadly Business
A Mia Quinn Mystery
By Lis Wiehl with April Henry

Mia Quinn, deputy district attorney, returns in this 2nd novel of murder and suspense. In the first novel, the reader learns that Mia’s husband was drinking and died in a car crash, leaving Mia to raise her two children alone. She goes from being a stay-at-home mom back to the courtroom. She discovers that her deceased husband was living a double life, leaving her with mountains of debt and a diamond ring in a fancy box. The ring wasn’t for her. So whose was it?

In this book, Mia gets a case involving 3 teens who drop a shopping cart from 4 stories up onto an unsuspecting woman’s head, nearly killing her. While Mia has to decide whether to prosecute them as adults or as minors, her police officer partner, Charlie, tells her that he believes her husband did not die by accident. In fact, he has a strong suspicion that her husband was murdered. Scott may have not only had a mistress, but Charlie suspects he was also into some shady dealings. Mia does not want to hear any of this.

Mia looks into the lives of the 3 boys involved in the shopping cart crime and sees sad and painful life situations that might explain why the boys did it. It’s an election year for her boss and he has his hands full with the darts his opponent is throwing at him in the media. The pressure is on Mia to make the right call so her boss can win the election. If he doesn’t win she may not have a job.

Things are not always what they appear to be on the surface. Who does she trust? And what are these strange feelings she is battling with over 2 male friends? Her life is complicated enough. Add romantic feelings, the fact it’s an election year, and someone is after her and Ms. Wiehl and Ms. Henry have cooked up another fast-paced novel with more than a few twists.

Honestly, I actually liked the first novel the best, and gave it 5 out of 5 stars. This second novel was good, but for some reason it didn’t keep me on the edge of my seat like the first mystery. I’d give this novel 4 out of 5 stars.
