Sugar and Spice Advice on Exercising in March

I don’t know if you have ever had a chance to see the musical, “7 Brides for 7 Brothers,” but if you haven’t, you are in for a hilarious treat. Even if you are not a musicals lover, rent a copy of it. You’ll laugh your head off. (Great way to burn calories, remember. A good hearty laugh is worth 3 minutes of jogging.) Aside from the fact that it is a fun story and there are some great dancing scenes. The setting is in Oregon Territory and the main characters are 7 brothers who the city folk called “slumucking backwoodsmen.” They kidnap some city girls and then an avalanche blocks the townsfolk for the entire winter. Of course, the girls are kept separate by from the boys. They get to live in the barn, and the girls get the house.

The girls are getting bored being cooped up in the house and they sing this song about the months of the year. The snow keeps piling up. When they get to the month of March, these are the words, “March comes in like a lion, what else? Still the snow never melts.”

So here we are in March. Some of you living in the colder states may be singing the same tune. And maybe tired of being snowbound. Spring is coming, but in the mean-time there are still ways to get in your exercise. Remember your New Year’s goal to exercise? Don’t give up. Actually March is a good time to put one foot in front of the other and start walking.

Tips for exercising in March:
Make sure you have dressed for warmth and safety. Wear gloves, plus a hat or beanie, a scarf and a warm jacket. Some people recommend a microfleece vest that will provide insulation without making you look like a giant snowperson. If you are exercising in the evening or early morning hours, make sure you attach some reflective stripping so that your a visible to oncoming cars, etc.

As in any season of exercise, protect your feet. Wear comfortable walking or running shoes with a good deal of padding and an arch support. Wear thick cotton socks as the fiber will wick away moisture from your feet. On wet days, put on some boots and walk away.

Sometimes it is so easy to want to stay indoors where it is warm and cozy. On the other hand, you don’t want to mess up your exercise routines. Anytime is a good time to have a buddy to encourage you and keep you on the right track. So when a cup of hot chocolate and a warm fire are tempting you to miss a day of exercise and fresh air, get a hold of your exercise buddy and take that walk.

Some climates are still too cold and snowy in March. Don’t forget you can join a walking club and walk in the mall. Your shopping center doesn’t have a walking club? No big deal. Grab a buddy, even your hubby or one or all of your children, and walk the mall at a decent pace. This is not the time for window shopping. Oh, and you may want to leave your wallet at home to avoid the temptation to buy, buy, buy.
